CHARACTER TRAINING
Character training and opportunities to practice social and emotional skills are embedded throughout our curriculum and daily procedures. Additionally, we will take time several times a month to talk about and practice important social skills and character traits such as friendliness, kindness, manners, and emotional control.
CALM DOWN TECHNIQUES
Coping with big emotions is one of the most difficult tasks for developing brains. Overpowering emotions are often the biggest source of stress for little ones and consequently one of the biggest contributors to "misbehavior" in young children. Therefore, teaching children to recognize and constructively deal with adverse feelings is one of the most important things we can do for our students.
As teachers we must have empathy and grace while actively teaching children to cope and constructively navigate both the world within them and that around them. In our classroom we purposely teach, model, and practice calm down strategies such as belly breathing, counting, meditation, and refocusing.
DEVELOPING POSITIVE SELF CONCEPTS WHILE CELEBRATING DIVERSITY
In our class, we embrace and celebrate multiculturalism while simultaneously working to build a positive self-concept in each student, empowering children to love themselves and others while also appreciating both likeness and differences in others. By working to build a positive and inclusive classroom community as well as healthy confidence in oneself, we give students the foundations needed to happy, productive, and tolerant world citizens and community members.
